JCC Business Spotlight: Scuba Smiles for kids

Gentle blue waves. Colorful tropical fish. Fun and friendly seascape.

Your children no longer need to travel several hours to the Texas Coast to experience a fun, underwater world. Instead, they can jump into a place in San Antonio where whales, walrus and rare fish make the depths of the ocean seem not far away at all.

Scuba Smiles is a pediatric dental office where state-of-the-art animation creates an inviting, kid-friendly journey.

“We know kids, generally speaking, are scared of going to the dentist,” said Dr. Jason Kboudi, who opened Scuba Smiles in the Spring of 2016 along with Dr. Gerald Crouch as a companion to Advanced Smile Care, our dental practice for adults established in 1982. “We designed Scuba Smiles as a place where your children would run to the dental office, instead of running away from it.”

“We trust Dr. Kboudi, and we knew Scuba Smiles would be a great fit for our children,” remarked Danielle Sarfati whose three daughters are patients at this North side practice located at the northeast corner of Lockhill-Selma and Huebner Roads.

Rachel Sarfati, 11, and her sisters Elisheva, 9, and Maya, 7, have been patients at Scuba Smiles since the office first opened. “The office is friendly. It’s easy to book appointments. My girls really enjoy going to the dentist,” said their mother.

The “captain” of Scuba Smiles is Lela Farmer, D.D.S., M.S.D, who is renowned for her work in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Farmer first moved to Texas in 2006 to attend Rice University. After graduation, she attended dental school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree in 2014. Dr. Farmer says she is thrilled to be back in Texas and living in San Antonio, because her husband has family living here. Her passion for her work is evident as soon as you meet her.

“It’s critical to gain the trust of a child in order to get the access you need to treat their little mouths,” said Dr. Farmer. “Once you earn their trust, children are more likely to start to develop better dental hygiene and nutrition habits that last a lifetime.”

In addition to routine exams, Scuba Smiles offers a wide range of treatment options for children such as X-rays, infant and toddler cleanings, fluoride and sealants, cavity risk assessment, no-drill cavity fixes and oral and general sedation.

Because patients at Scuba Smiles are instantly transported to a fun, new world, any anxiety about visiting a dentist gets washed away. Sometimes the magic moment happens when a child gets out of the car and sees the re-enactment of a shipwreck greeting them at the entrance of the office. For other children, there is transformational joy in seeing a giant whale smashing through a glass wall inside.

“The kids actually get excited to see Dr. Farmer. We are very thankful for the amazing team at Scuba Smiles. My children will never see any other pediatric dentist,” said Danielle Sarfati.
