Rick Byrd
Wheelchair Tennis Professional

Rick has played tennis recreationally since high school and studied tennis in college. He continued as an avid able-bodied, recreational tennis player throughout law school and afterwards. During the summer of 1997, he lost the ability to walk due to a rare, painful and disabling metabolic bone disease. As a result, he chose to retire from law practice later that year. As part of a program of physical rehabilitation, Rick learned to play wheelchair tennis in 2002.

Since becoming disabled, he has played in numerous tennis tournaments (wheelchair, able-bodied, and up/down) and became accomplished enough in the sport to have earned "Wheelchair Certified" status from the USPTA. Rick has also completed the Professional Tennis Registry ("PTR") course for Instructing Wheelchair Tennis.  From 2008 to 2011, he served as a member of the Wheelchair Tennis Committee of the Texas Section of the United States Tennis Association ("USTA").

Rick’s goal and mission is to promote awareness of, and expand participation in, the sport of wheelchair tennis by persons with impaired mobility throughout San Antonio and South Texas.
