A Message From the President/CEO Saul F. Levenshus
Well, February has arrived and I am already looking forward to warm weather and all the great activities that take place at the JCC in the coming spring and summer months. As the weather begins to heat up, many of our programs will head outside to take advantage of San Antonio’s mild climate. Our Youth Soccer Academy kicks off in mid-March and we anticipate nearly 300 kids will be enrolled ages 4 and up. In April, our swim lessons begin for kids of all ages, and then Swim Team dives into action in May. Our Annual Fore! the Kids Golf Tournament will take place at the Quarry Golf Club on Friday May 4. If you play golf or know someone else who does, spread the word and consider joining us for a great day of golf all in support of youth services at the JCC.
And for our tennis enthusiasts, warmer weather also means it’s time to get back out onto the courts. If you haven’t already ventured out to meet our team of tennis professionals, I’d urge you to do so. They’ve put together a full schedule of classes, clinics, and leagues aimed at both adults and juniors. And our Tennis Clubhouse provides a perfect complement to the best courts in the area with plenty of free open court time, better and more secure access to the courts, men’s and women’s bathrooms and changing spaces, and areas both inside and out to promote socialization and friendship.
And, before you know it, summer camp will be here. Our new J-Camp Brochure was just mailed with all the information needed to help you enjoy another summer of fun at the J. Prospective campers will be able to visit our website and browse the wide range of camp activities and enjoy pictures and memories from last year’s camp. And once you’re registered, the fun really begins. This year’s theme, Once Upon A Summer, promises to deliver memories to last a lifetime. Our J-Camp Open House will be held Tuesday, March 27 from 3-6:30pm. Ask about our early registration discounts, which will be in effect through March 30, for all JCC members. Register early while space exists.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. There are several great activities and events coming your way indoors that will keep you entertained and enriched over the next several weeks and months. Our 17th Annual Jewish Film Festival opens at Santikos Palladium IMAX at the RIM, February 17-21, with another great line-up of films and guest speakers. This year’s event promises to be one of our best. Check out all the details & then purchase your tickets.
We are also pleased to present the final lectures from our JCC Author & Speaker Series, beginning Thursday, March 1 at 7pm, as the JCC presents Black Boychik, featuring Sarge, a stand-up comedian and entertainer. Emily Paster will be here April 26 at 7pm to discuss her book, The Joys of Jewish Preserving. Find more information online, or contact Maya Siler at 210-302-6867. And don’t forget to sign up early for our annual First Night Passover Seder, set for Friday, March 30. This fun family oriented holiday celebration is always a big hit and a great way to welcome in the Passover holiday.
Of course, let’s not forget the Sheldon Vexler Theatre, now in its 19th season. The final two productions this season promise to be outstanding, with performances of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, A Steampunk Tragedy (February 10-March 4), followed by the highly acclaimed production of Steel Magnolias (May 12 – June 10). Learn about the steampunk concept for Hamlet in last month's blog!
It all adds up to an exciting few months at the J; and it’s all right there at your fingertips. Browse your February Center Peace (available online or pick up a paper copy next time you're at the J) for more information on all of the above, or peruse our website for the most up to date details on the programs of your choosing. We’re glad the JCC is able to bring you such a broad array of special services and programs. We appreciate your on-going support and we’re glad you belong here.
