Local Athlete to Compete in World Maccabiah Games
Haley Herzberg, a former Block & Dreeben student who was active in BBYO San Antonio and took swim lessons as a child at the JCC, has been invited to compete as part of Team USA at the World Maccabiah Games. Currently a freshman at UC Santa Barbara where she is also a swimmer, Haley, who is the daughter of Mark and Anne Herzberg, joins eleven other girls and twelve boys from all over the United States.
The World Maccabiah Games are a wonderful event and provide young Jewish athletes with the chance to compete in the third largest international sporting event in the world. Team USA will depart the U.S. on June 27, 2017. The opening ceremonies will take place in Jerusalem July 6, and the swimming competition will take place at the Wingate Institute in Netanya from July 9-12, with the open water competition on July 16 in Tiberas.
To date, there are more than 2,500 applications with 600+ team members appointed. Team USA is well on their way to having a USA delegation of over 1200 - the largest team to go overseas anytime for any competition, and more than double the US Team that went to the recent Olympics in Rio.
In addition to representing the United States at the World Maccabiah Games, Haley will also have an Olympic Trial cut in the 400 freestyle. At school, she swims the 100, 200, 500, 800, and 1650 freestyles. Haley is studying Environmental Studies.
