A Message from the President/CEO Saul F. Levenshus
2016 was a challenging year for our Campus building and facilities. As you may recall last April, San Antonio was hit with several hail storms. Initially, we didn’t see any damage, but only 3 days later the building began to take on water from the ensuing rain; and we spent the next 8 months recovering, repairing, and replacing elements of our building that were subsequently damaged. And that was all going on in the midst of construction to add an East Campus entrance as part of our new access control plan.
Despite all the chaos, and all the construction teams streaming through the building at all hours of the day and night, our Operations, maintenance, and program staff managed to keep us functioning with only minor interruptions of service.
Who would have imagined that a storm that created such havoc and an inordinate number of daily challenges would also end up providing the impetus for us to re-evaluate the life cycle of our building and challenge us to consider additional improvements to the facilities?
But now that we have a new roof and new heating and air conditioning units, we plan to turn our focus toward a few areas that are in need of further attention. In the next few months, work will commence to upgrade our locker rooms with newly tiled showers, upgraded flooring, and more appealing lockers for our adult changing areas.
This spring we will initiate some patch work on the pool area to repair cracks on the pools surface and on the decking surrounding the pool. Sidewalk repairs in front of the building will also take place at this time, as will repairs to areas of the parking lot, along with sections of our tennis courts that are in need of attention.
While all that is taking place, the JCC continues to explore the possibility of creating more and much needed space to enhance our facilities and support the growth of our programs and services. While plans are still unfolding, we remain committed to providing the same high quality services our members and the community have come to expect.
So, thank you for the support you’ve provided in making the JCC, the place to be. As plans develop over the coming months, we will be asking for additional input on some of the areas under consideration that we hope to improve and impact, including services to adults and seniors, fitness and group exercise, children and youth, and The Sheldon Vexler Theatre.
As always, we will strive to have as little interruption of service as possible. Knowing full well that the best laid plans often go awry, I’d like to thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation as we undertake some of these projects and reinforce that we’re glad you belong here®!
